[dropcap]Antony[/dropcap] and the Johnsons‘ cover of Current 93‘s Soft Black Stars, originally from the Current 93 album of the same title released in 1998, is featured on the current UNICEF commercial World Upside Down. The version of the lullaby-esque piece by Current 93 that is used in the commercial was first published on 2001’s I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy, that was released shortly after the band released their self-titled debut album on David Tibet’s Durtro label in 2000, and the two band’s collaboration continued on various occasions, leading to various split releases. Eventually, Antony and the Johnsons went on to huge commercial success and recently contributed to the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with their song Angel on Fire.
The connection of the lyrics with the aim of UNICEF is fairly obvious – the ad is called World Upside Down, referring to the sudden and grave change children have to face in times of war and crisis, masterfully and dramatically displayed in the video. The version of Antony and the Johnsons is haunting and drama-laden, strongly underlining the message of the UNICEF clip.
