[dropcap]The Damned[/dropcap] will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary next year, but 9 years in, The Captain had departed for a solo career, and Brian James left to join the super group The Lords of The New Church. Punk was nearly a decade old, and in 1985 Goth seemed to be the new trend. Thus, Dave Vanian and Co seemed to have left behind their punk rock roots. However—filling the void came the band’s most Gothic period (that finally matched the guise of their vampiric front-man) with the release of their sixth studio album Phantasmagoria—one of the band’s most popular albums to this day.
The album’s signature romantic sound is channeled the creepy and almost Scream Lord Sutch like track “Grimly Fiendish”:
